Building a Stove (作灶 - Zuo Zao) is a term in the traditional Almanac (Huangli), referring to the act of building or repairing a stove in a home kitchen. In ancient Chinese society, the stove was an important component of family life, used not only for cooking food but also symbolizing the prosperity and harmony of the family. Therefore, "Building a Stove" is not merely a simple household chore, but contains profound cultural significance.
In traditional Chinese culture, the stove is viewed as one of the guardian deities of the family. According to records in the Rites of Zhou (Zhou Li), the custom of worshipping the Kitchen God (Zao Shen) existed as early as the Zhou Dynasty. The ancients believed that the Kitchen God could reach the ears of heaven and report the good and evil of the human world to the deities of heaven and earth. Therefore, at the end of each year, there is a ceremony to send the Kitchen God to heaven, and at the beginning of the year, to welcome him back home. Choosing an auspicious day and time to build a stove seeks the Kitchen God's blessing for the family's health, peace, and abundant harvests.
In the Almanac, "Building a Stove" is usually considered a major event requiring date selection. Generally speaking, choosing an auspicious day (Huang Dao Ji Ri) for stove-building activities can increase family fortune; conversely, starting construction on a day unsuitable for building a stove may bring negative impacts. For example, the Record of the Jade Box (Yu Xia Ji) contains detailed records of which days are suitable for building a stove and which days should be avoided.
