Acupuncture and moxibustion (针灸 - Zhenjiu) is one of the important components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Originating in China, it is a method of treating diseases by stimulating specific acupoints on the human body. Acupuncture therapy includes two parts: "Acupuncture" (针法 - needling) and "Moxibustion" (灸法). "Acupuncture" refers to the use of specially made needles to stimulate acupoints; "Moxibustion" refers to the use of moxa sticks or moxa cones made from mugwort leaves to burn and scorch acupoints, providing a warm stimulation.
The history of acupuncture and moxibustion can be traced back to ancient times. According to ancient texts like the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), theories and practices regarding acupuncture already existed as early as the pre-Qin period. By the Han Dynasty, the Huangdi Neijing systematically summarized the medical achievements of the time, including a vast amount of content on acupuncture. After the Tang and Song dynasties, with the development of medicine, acupuncture techniques were further perfected, gradually forming a relatively complete system.
The theoretical foundation of acupuncture is primarily based on TCM's holistic concept and meridian (Jingluo) theory. TCM believes that there are invisible and intangible, yet truly existing "meridians" inside the human body. These meridians connect all tissues and organs throughout the body, and Qi and blood circulate within them. When a disease occurs in the human body, it is often caused by the sluggish circulation or imbalance of Qi and blood. By needling or applying moxibustion to specific acupoints, the flow of Qi and blood can be adjusted, restoring the body's state of balance, thereby achieving the goal of treating the disease.
Acupuncture is widely used in the treatment of various diseases, showing especially significant efficacy for painful conditions such as neck, shoulder, lower back, and leg pain, headaches, and arthritis. In addition, it also has good effects in treating digestive system diseases (like gastritis and constipation), nervous system diseases (like facial paralysis and insomnia), gynecological diseases (like irregular menstruation), and some functional disorders. In recent years, with deepening research, acupuncture has also been used as an adjuvant treatment for various chronic diseases like hypertension and asthma.
Although acupuncture is a relatively safe and effective treatment method, the following points still require attention: - It should be performed by professionally trained and qualified practitioners. - Certain acupoints on the abdomen and lumbosacral region of pregnant women should be used with caution. - Acupuncture should not be performed immediately in situations of severe heart disease, hypertensive crisis, etc. - Disinfection must be strictly observed before and after treatment to avoid cross-infection.
In traditional Chinese concepts, choosing the right time for acupuncture treatment is believed to better exert its curative effect. Therefore, in some local customs, people consult the Almanac to decide when to undergo acupuncture. For example, based on the principles of mutual generation and restriction of the Five Elements, combined with the analysis of an individual's Eight Characters of Birth (Bazi), performing acupuncture at the most favorable time might yield twice the result with half the effort.
However, it should be noted that this practice primarily reflects traditional culture's emphasis on time selection and lacks scientific backing. Modern medicine places more emphasis on formulating reasonable treatment plans based on the needs of the condition and the characteristics of the individual's constitution.
As a treasure in the repository of traditional medicine of the Chinese nation, acupuncture and moxibustion's unique theoretical system and rich clinical experience have made tremendous contributions to the cause of human health. With the advancement of science and technology and the promotion of globalization, acupuncture is gradually stepping onto the world stage, becoming one of the bridges connecting Eastern and Western cultures.
